ICPR 2018 – Call for Bids

Bids to host ICPR 2018 must be submitted to the IAPR Conferences and Meetings Committee by May 24th 2014.

The selection of the conference venue will be made by the IAPR Governing Board (GB) during its meeting at ICPR 2014 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Call for Nominations for IAPR Fellows

Reminder: Call for Nominations for IAPR Fellows

Deadline for Submission of Nomination and Endorsement Forms is January 31, 2014.

We welcome nominations for the award of FIAPR. Anyone is eligible to be nominated, except for the current members of the Executive Committee and of the Fellow Committee.

To initiate a nomination, a nominator must submit an IAPR Fellow Nomination Form. Any member of an IAPR Member Society can serve as nominator, except for the nominee him/herself and the current members of the Fellow Committee.

Each nomination must be endorsed by at least one recommendation letter (submitted Endorsement Form), either from a member of an IAPR Member Society (different from the nominator) or from an IAPR Fellow.

Electronic Nomination and Endorsement forms should be submitted no later than January 31, 2014.

Each electronic submission will be acknowledged by an email containing the submitted form. In case of difficulty please address your data and the problem encountered through email to the chair of the Fellow Committee, Brian Lovell:

ICPR 2014 will be an international forum for discussions on recent advances in the fields of Pattern Recognition; Machine Learning and Computer Vision; and on applications of these technologies in various fields.

ICPR 2014 – Call for Contest, Tutorial and Workshop Proposals

The ICPR 2014 Organizing Committee invites proposals for contests, tutorials and workshops in conjunction with the 22nd International Conference on Pattern Recognition (www.icpr2014.org). These events will be held on August 24, 2014, immediately before the main conference.

Contests

The aim of contests and challenges is to advance algorithm and method development by objective evaluation on common data sets. The contest organizer is responsible for providing good quality data and defining objective evaluation criteria that are applied to the results of submitted algorithms.

Tutorials

We seek tutorials on core techniques, application areas and emerging research topics that are of interest within the ICPR community. A good tutorial should provide a broad introduction to the chosen research area as well as in-depth coverage on selected advanced topics. Proposals that focus exclusively on the presenters’ own work or commercial presentations are not eligible.

Workshops

Workshops provide an informal setting for discussing specific topics in depth. Good workshops encourage discussion and interaction between the participants. This can be achieved in a number of ways, e.g., through presentations of submitted work, panel discussions and hands-on sessions.

Guideline for submitting proposals

To propose a contest, tutorial or workshop, a PDF file containing the information outlined below must be sent to the ICPR 2014 Contest, Tutorial and Workshop Co-chairs by September 15th 2013.

The proposal should contain the following:

  1. Title and abstract
  2. Name and contact information of the main organizers and any committees involved.
  3. Brief discussion of the scope and target audience. Estimate the number of participants. Both smaller and larger events will be hosted.
  4. Tentative schedule. Indicate here if a half or full day event is planned.
  5. Overall organization. Depending on the event type, for example, review process and paper selection, submission deadlines, invited speakers, distribution of submitted contributions, description of data sets and evaluation procedures, coverage of any additional costs of the event, etc.

Proposal assessment

Each proposal will be assessed based on its scientific merit, proposed structure, overall relevance, and how it complements the main conference sgx nifty live. Notification of acceptance will be given no later than October 1st 2013.

ICPR 2014 will be responsible for:

  • Providing a meeting venue with necessary technical equipment and catering services during the coffee breaks.
  • Providing staff to help with the on-site organization.
  • Advertising the event on the ICPR web site.
  • Scheduling the event together with the organizers and including it in the conference program.

Organizers of a contest, tutorial or workshop are responsible for:

  • Publishing a webpage with information about the event and its program.
  • Sending out a call for papers/contributions.
  • Reviewing and selecting submitted papers, if applicable.
  • Compiling and distributing accepted contributions to the participants.
  • Inviting speakers and ensuring their participation, if applicable.
  • Obtaining funding or sponsorship for any additional cost that may arise,
    e.g., for prizes or awards.
  • Leading the event at ICPR2014.

Costs and terms

A registration fee will be set by ICPR 2014 to cover costs for meeting
rooms, technical equipment and staff, catering services and other
administrative costs. The cost will be the same for all contests, tutorials
and workshops. ICPR 2014 reserves the right to cancel any event if the
above responsibilities are not fulfilled, if deadlines are missed, or if
too few attendees register for the event to support its costs. Organizers
can apply for sponsorship for the event from the IAPR Conferences and
Meetings Committee:

Without such sponsorship, the name and logo of IAPR cannot be used for the
event.

Celebrating the life and work of Maria Petrou

Special Edition of Pattern Recognition Letters: Celebrating the life and work of Maria Petrou

Maria Petrou was an outstanding scientist with a well developed sense of humour, and seemingly tireless energy. She had the ability to enliven whatever she became involved in. Although she worked for most of her professional life in the UK, she was born and died in Thessaloniki, and was proud of her Greek roots and the language, culture and intellectual traditions of her country of birth. She trained as an astronomer, but moved into the fields of pattern recognition and image analysis. She took a leading role in the IAPR, and made many innovative research contributions, some of which are set to have a lasting impact. She was a woman and devoted mother, who worked in fields where women are in a minority and has provided a role model for younger women scientists and engineers to follow. Those who came into contact with her were invariably impressed both by her incisive thinking and warm personality. She enriched the scientific lives of over 50 PhD students and numerous collaborators from all over the world. Sadly, she passed away on October 15 2012 after a brave battle with cancer, and will be greatly missed.

The aim of this special edition of Pattern Recognition Letters is to celebrate Maria’s life and work. The aim is to collect together both scientific articles and personal reflections which illuminate her contributions to our field. We encourage contributions from both those who worked with Maria, and those whose work was influenced by her.

Maria’s interests were broad, spanning image processing and analysis, remote sensing, medical image analysis, computer vision and, of course, pattern recognition. She was noted for her key contributions the trace transform, mixed pixel classification (remote sensing community), Hough, contextual classification (multi resolution MRF), and edge/line detection.

We invite three different types of contribution:

a) Short recollections of Maria and reflections on her life and work, that capture her personality and interests. We are particularly keen to receive photographs to illustrate these accounts. We would hope to edit both the photographs and accounts together into a montage capturing the different facets of her life and work.

b) Reviews that place her work in the context of the literature in the field, focus on her scientific contributions and assess their lasting influence.

c) Original scientific papers in the broad areas of Maria’s research interests, pointing out their relevance to her work. These could be posthumous papers with Maria as co-author, submitted by one of her collaborators or students.

Although we want the special edition to reflect Maria’s life and personal qualities, we expect that the bulk of papers in the Special Edition will be original scientific articles focused around her research interests.
