Walter Kropatsch has served the IAPR for four decades, providing outstanding leadership on numerous committees. He began his service in 1984 as a member of the Governing Board representing Austria and continued in that role for 27 years (until 2011). He founded the Austrian Association for Pattern Recognition in 1987 and was its Chair from 1987 to 1995. He served on the IAPR Executive Committee from 1998–2008, including two terms as Treasurer (1998–2002), 1st Vice-President (2002–04), President (2004–06), and Past President (2006–08). He chaired several standing committees: the Conferences and Meetings Committee (1992–94), the Nominating Committee (2006–08), the Fellow Committee (2008–10), the Advisory Committee (2010–14), and the Jake Aggarwal Prize Committee (2018–20). Beyond this impressive chairing record, he has also served as a member on multiple committees: the Membership Committee (1986–88), the Fellow Committee (1994–96 and 2010–12), the Conferences and Meetings Committee (1996–98), the Advisory Committee (2020–26), the Maria Petrou Prize Committee (2014–16), the Jake Aggarwal Prize Committee (2016–18 and 2020–22), and the Ad Hoc 50th Anniversary Committee (2022–24). `
Walter has also provided leadership in IAPR technical committees, as Chair of TC7 on Remote Sensing (1986–90) and as the founding Chair of TC15 on Graph-based Representations (1998–2000).
Further, Walter has contributed to conference organization as the General Chair of ICPR 1996 (Vienna, Austria), of the IAPR TC15 Workshops on Graph-based Representations in Pattern Recognition (GbR: 1997 Lyon; 1999 Haindorf; 2013 Vienna; and 2015 Beijing), and of the IAPR TC7 Workshop on Multisource Data Integration in Remote Sensing (1990 College Park).
Altogether, Walter Kropatsch has made outstanding contributions to the IAPR in an extraordinary number and variety of administrative roles over a period of 40 years.
