Josef Kittler has served the IAPR in myriad ways for more than 40 years, starting as a member of the Long-Range Planning Committee (1982–84). He then became an IAPR Governing Board representative for the British member society (BPRA) in 1988 and continued in that role for 16 years (until 2004), while also serving on other IAPR committees including the Conference Committee (1984–92) and the Publications and Publicity Committee (1988–92). He was also elected as the Second Vice President (1992–94) and continued his Executive Committee leadership as President of IAPR (1994–96) and Past President (1996–98). From 1986 to 1988, he was also Editor of the IAPR Newsletter.
From 2004 to 2024, Josef consistently served on at least one committee at all times. He was a member of the J.K. Aggarwal Prize Committee (2004–06) and the King-Sun Fu Prize Committee (2004–12), while also serving on the ICPR Liaison Committee (2008–10). He served on the Constitution and Bylaws Committee (2010–14) and on the Advisory Committee (2012–16), after which he was Chair of the Maria Petrou Prize Committee (2016–18), where he then served three more terms as a member, while also returning to the ICPR Liaison Committee from 2018 to 2022.
At the same time, Josef Kittler has made substantial advisory and organizational contributions to major IAPR conferences. He served on the Advisory Committees of ICPR 2008, 2012, and 2016, and as General Chair of ICPR 2004, 2018 and 2024. He is very active in the biometrics community, where he served as Program Chair for several events of the International Conference on Biometrics (ICB) and as a member of the Advisory Committee for the International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB).
