How to reach the island of Crete
Airplane Crete offers a lot of direct air connections with many international airports around Europe and connecting flights to the rest of the world through the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. Connections to Heraklion International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” (HER), named after the Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis,  have a flight time of about 40 minutes.

It is possible for international participants to get a direct flight to Heraklion airport, if they select as layover point a major European city like Frankfurt, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Zurich, Geneva, Milan or London.

Heraklion’s airport is about 5km east of the city and about 26km (appr. 25 minutes drive) from the Conference Hotel in Hersonissos. Major car-rental companies have desks at the airport. Taxi and public bus are available for transfer from/to Iraklion.

Boat Heraklion also receives a lot of visitors by boat. There are daily ferry trips to and from Piraeus (Athens’ port), and many weekly ones to and from other islands and towns in Greece.  The sea journey takes about 6 to 7 hours and you may find trips offered by Minoan LinesANEK Lines & Superfast Ferries.

The terminal at Heraklion port is within walking distance from the town’s center and there is plenty of taxis to take visitors to their destinations. The Crete intra regional Bus terminal is also located close to the port.
