IAPR/ICDAR 2017 Awards
The IAPR/ICDAR Outstanding Achievements Award is presented to Prof. Rangachar Kasturi for seminal research in document image analysis and graphics recognition shaping the evolution of the document image analysis field, and for outstanding leadership to both the ICDAR and the wider international pattern recognition community.
The IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award is presented to Dr. Alicia Fornés for outstanding contributions in the recognition of handwriting, text and graphics, with high impact to the field of Digital Humanities, and her service to the IAPR Technical Committee on Graphics Recognition.
The awards ceremony will be held during ICDAR2017 in Kyoto, Japan. Prof. Kasturi will deliver the Opening Keynote Speech at ICDAR2017.

Bio:
Dr. Kasturi is the Douglas W. Hood Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida.
He was born in Bangalore (1949) and received his BE degree from Bangalore University (1968) and MSEE (1980) and Ph.D. (1982) degrees from Texas Tech University.
He was a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (1982-2003).
He was the Editor-in-Chief of the Machine Vision and Applications (1993-94) and the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (1995-98).
He served as the President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR, 2002-04) and as the President of the IEEE Computer Society (2008).
He is an IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of IAPR.
He was a Core Fulbright scholar during 1999.
As a current Fulbright Specialist, he is looking forward to working with educators and researchers around the world to share his expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, and help build capacity at the host institutions.
The winner of the IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award
Bio: Alicia Fornés received the B.S. degree in Computer Science in 2003 from the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) and the Ph.D. degree in 2009 from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She also finished the piano studies at the Conservatory Superior of Music of the Illes Balears in 2001. Her Ph.D. work was focused on writer identification of old music scores. She was the recipient of the AERFAI (Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition Spanish Association) best thesis award 2009-2010.
She is currently a Senior Research Fellow ("Ramon y Cajal" Fellow) in computer vision at the UAB, and an adscribed researcher at the Computer Vision Center.
She has participated in several research projects (including European projects) and technology transfer projects. She has published more than 70 papers in international conferences and journals. She has done several research stays abroad, including the University of Bern (Switzerland), the University of La Rochelle (France), the Osaka Prefecture University (Japan) and Uppsala University (Sweden).
Since 2011, she is part of the the Executive Committee of the IAPR TC-10 (Technical Committee 10 on Graphics Recognition) as: IAPR TC-10 vice-Chair (2017-current), IAPR TC-10 Educational Officer (2015-2016), and IAPR TC-10 Newsletter Editor (2011-2016) (and Twitter manager: TC-10 Twitter).
Since 2016, Ramón Valdés (Spanish Philology Dept., UAB) and Alicia Fornés are the scientific coordinators of the Digital Humanities Research Network of the UAB.
Her research interests include document image analysis, graphics recognition, digital humanities, handwriting recognition, historical documents, optical music recognition and writer identification.
