Pattern Recognition for Adaptive User Interfaces – Special Issue of AVI 2020 and ICPR 2020

Emotion recognition has been demonstrated as an instrument that may be used to adapt interfaces on users’ attitude and preference and on the base of dynamic information of them. Nowadays, user emotions are only a little part of the information that may be revealed, and the upcoming possibilities for fine tailoring the user experience are definitely uncountable. In the era of IoT, the multitude of wearable sensors, smartwatches and more form a rich instrument set that may feed information on users and their context, or may even propose an endless class of self-adaptive styles of interaction.

Contemporarily, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality, by their strong immersivity, as well as Augmented Reality, with its higher degree of realism, also represent emerging technologies driven by their success and diffusion. Natural language processing (NLP) has also achieved robust performance thus enabling the design of effective interaction interfaces. They are changing the user interaction paradigms by freeing the users from the classic screen borders, and gestural interfaces are adding new degrees of freedom and new instruments for keeping user involvement and immersion high. These possibilities, with a perception of the experience that is as realistic and immersive as it is fragile, also increase the spaces, but also the need, for the application of Pattern Recognition theories and techniques to Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The users may be expecting additional emotions from the new technologies that should not be disappointed by a stereotyped experience or interface.

This special issue aims at gathering and presenting new advances in the tasks and applications related, but not limited, to:

  • Pattern recognition for Human Computer Interaction
  • Emotion recognition and adaptive interfaces
  • Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality in HCI
  • Natural language processing (NLP)
  • Design and evaluation of Innovative Interactive System
  • Interaction in mobile and embedded systems

The purpose of this special issue is to examine how the concepts and the theories related to Pattern Recognition are impacting on HCI in the sector of adaptive user interfaces and what can be applied to new opportunities and the associated challenges in the field. It solicits original work that is not under consideration for publication in other journals or conferences. If the papers were published and presented at AVI 2020 or ICPR 2020 conferences, their extended versions are also strictly taken into consideration provided that at least 30% of new original contribution is discussed. Papers will be accepted only after a peer review.
